Welcome to the Hard Place Website.
We hope you will enjoy discovering something about the band whether you
are here having seen us play or are thinking of booking us for your function.
Here’s
the scientific bit. We’re an eight piece band: two sax, trumpet, guitar,
bass, keyboard/electric violin, drums. Three of us sing: two female, one
male voices.
We are a band that really enjoys playing our music whether it’s from the
forties and fifties rhythm-and-blues tradition, from the soul explosion
of the sixties and seventies or even good songs from the charts ( they
have to be good good to get into our repertoire! ). Audience members frequently
comment on the fact that we have so much energy and laugh a lot as well.
We figure that if we enjoy what we do, the audience will as well.
There
are not many bands around that boast our sort of line-up with a strong
brass section and a variety of vocalists. Its tempting to think we may
be too big, will take up too much room, will cost too much! If that were
so we would not have survived playing in the South West! We have played
in small bars and pubs not only in this country but in France, Holland.
Prague, Scotland and Wales! We’ve also played in some pretty large and
impressive venues in all those countries too. We adapt how we play in
terms of equipment , volume and what we play to the occasion.
Our
music suits weddings where we generally offer a set of quiet, ballad-style
numbers for the social part of the reception before providing the dance
groove for the champagne fuelled revellers!
We
play a lot of birthday celebrations not only for the more mature hipsters
but also for eighteen and twenty one-sters. On these occasions the quiet
set is usually surplus to requirements.
Company
parties, anniversaries, barbies, festivals…we do them all!
We
work our programme to suit the hirer. We are not one of those bands that
does its two x one hour sets with a half an hour break in between and
then spends all night trying to flog the audience t-shirts, CD’s and air
miles. We often start with a seventy five minute set of old R&B numbers:
Louis Jordan, Ray Charles…the music made popular by Jools Holland, Georgie
Fame and Brian Setzer. Then we can provide another two hours plus of soul
and classic rock. What you get from us is loads of energetic good music
(we’re one of those bands that still reads music!)
